The 104-passenger vessel was launched in 1956 as part of the Norwegian-owned Hurtigurten fleet, which travelled the coast between Bergen and Kirkenes.
Work on the windfarm itself is expected to begin later this year.
Alistair Carmichael MP said fishermen already held the government in “poor regard” – and its latest response had done little to earn their trust.
Passengers welcomed the news, though questions were again raised about the announcement's timing.
A union leader said carers were working as “firefighters” rather than “staff with a listening ear and moment to spare”.
